Using radium isotopes to characterize water ages and coastal mixing rates: A sensitivity analysis

چکیده
Numerous studies have used naturally occurring Ra isotopes (223Ra, 224Ra, 226Ra, and 228Ra, with half-lives of 11.4 d, 3.7 d, 1600 y, and 5.8 y, respectively) to quantify water mass ages, coastal ocean mixing rates, and submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). Using Monte Carlo models, this study investigated how uncertainties in Ra isotope activities and the derived activity ratios (AR) arising from analytical uncertainty and natural variability affect the uncertainty associated with Ra-derived water ages and eddy diffusion coefficients, both of which can be used to calculate SGD. Analytical uncertainties associated with 224Ra, 226Ra, and 228Ra activities were reported in most published studies to be less than 10% of sample activity; those reported for 223Ra ranged from 7% to 40%. Relative uncertainty related to natural variability—estimated from the variability in 223Ra and 224Ra activities of replicate field samples—ranged from 15% to 50% and was similar for 223Ra activity, 224Ra activity, and the 224Ra/223Ra AR. Our analysis revealed that AR-based water ages shorter than 3-5 d often have relative uncertainties greater than 100%, potentially limiting their utility. Uncertainties in eddy diffusion coefficients estimated based on cross-shore gradients in short-lived Ra isotope activity were greater when fewer points were used to determine the linear trend, when the coefficient of determination (R2) was low, and when 224Ra, rather than 223Ra, was used. By exploring the uncertainties associated with Ra-derived water ages and eddy diffusion coefficients, this study will enable researchers to apply these methods more effectively and to reduce uncertainty. *Corresponding author: E-mail: [email protected]; phone: (443) 482-2348. Assessment of groundwater discharges into West Neck Bay, New York, via natural tracers
A field experiment to compare methods of assessing submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) was held on Shelter Island, NY, in May 2002. We evaluated the use of radon, radium isotopes, and methane to assess SGD rates and dynamics from a glacial aquifer in the coastal zone. Fluxes of radon across the sediment-water interface were calculated from changes in measured surface water inventories followi...
متن کاملThe importance of submarine groundwater discharge to the nearshore nutrient supply in the Gulf of Aqaba (Israel)
We used two short-lived radium isotopes (223Ra, 224Ra) and a mass balance approach applied to the radium activities to determine the nutrient contribution of saline submarine groundwater discharge to the coastal waters of the northern Gulf of Aqaba (Israel). Radium isotope activities were measured along transects during two seasons at a site that lacked any obvious surficial water input. An ons...
متن کاملEstimating the dynamics of groundwater input into the coastal zone via continuous radon-222 measurements.
Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) into the coastal zone has received increased attention in the last few years as it is now recognized that this process represents an important pathway for material transport. Assessing these material fluxes is difficult, as there is no simple means to gauge the water flux. To meet this challenge, we have explored the use of a continuous radon monitor to mea...
متن کاملTemporal and spatial variability of radium in the coastal ocean and its impact on computation of nearshore cross-shelf mixing rates
Constraining the exchange of water from the shoreline to the mid-shelf is necessary for the development of accurate and predictive models of nearshore circulation. Ra isotopes, which emanate from sediments and have a variety of half-lives, may be useful in measuring cross-shelf mixing rates. The distributions of Ra isotopes were measured in transects extending perpendicular from the shoreline a...

Radium isotopes (Ra, Ra, Ra, and Ra) and water chemistry were used to identify two chemically distinct sources of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in Celestún Lagoon, Yucatán, Mexico. Low salinity groundwater discharging from springs within the lagoon has previously been identified and extensively sampled for nutrient concentrations. However, a second type of groundwater discharging into t...
